Starting your gluten free and dairy free journey
We’ve all been there. You’re halfway through a recipe when you suddenly realise it calls for cream or butter. Not ideal when you’re cooking for someone with a dairy allergy! Or maybe you’ve just been advised to follow a gluten free diet or have been diagnosed with coeliac disease and don’t quite know where to start. Standing in the supermarket’s free from aisle can feel daunting. Bamboozled by brands you don’t recognise, too much choice, and no idea which ones taste good and whether they are a good substitute for the real McCoy.
Truly yummy substitutions
Hopefully this section of my Truly Yummy blog will help you find products that really work, without compromising on flavour. I’ve created two handy guides, one for gluten free and one for dairy free substitutions. These are my personal recommendations based on years of cooking, testing, and tasting.
If you’re unsure about a product or need advice on a specific substitution, feel free to reach out through my contact form. I’ll happily ask our Truly Yummy community for ideas, saving you the time, cost, and disappointment of trial and error.
You’ll also notice that throughout my recipes, I suggest gluten free and dairy free alternatives. But please always double check the product labels and ingredients, as manufacturers sometimes change these without warning.
my secret tip
Finally, here’s something I’d like to share with you, you don’t need to rely on the free from aisle. Many regular products are also gluten free or dairy free, even if they’re not labelled that way. The free from section can be handy, but it’s often pricier, so I like to keep my shopping balanced between both.
Hopefully, these tips and suggestions will help you cook with confidence and create some truly yummy food. No compromise required.
