Best Gluten Free Pizza UK | Shop-Bought, Takeaway & Homemade

This is a personal post based on my own experience. I’m not being paid to promote any brands and everything here reflects my honest findings. I hope it helps anyone navigating gluten free pizza.

Products and restaurant menus can change, so always check the ingredients and allergen information before purchasing any of the recommended products.

My Early Gluten Free Pizza Experience

Gluten free pizza has come a long way over the years. I’ve been gluten intolerant for more than thirty years and can still remember when my pizza bases, along with many other gluten free essentials, had to be collected from my local pharmacy on prescription. Back then, convenience was limited and Schär pizza bases were one of the only options available.

To be honest, pizza and pasta were the foods I missed the most after my diagnosis. In my early twenties I wasn’t interested in baking, nor did I have the confidence to make my own dough or experiment with gluten free flour if it was available. Instead, I simply accepted that pizza was something I would rarely eat.

Thankfully, times have changed enormously.

Shop-Bought Gluten Free Pizza Options

Today there is an incredible choice of gluten free pizzas and pizza bases. Schär still produces pizza bases, although I haven’t tried the latest version as there are now so many alternatives available.

Supermarkets now stock a range of fresh and frozen gluten free pizzas, with several also being dairy free, making them suitable for those avoiding both gluten and dairy. My personal favourite is the White Rabbit range, which I highly recommend if you’re looking for a quick lunch or an easy midweek meal.

The convenience of gluten free pizza has improved dramatically and there are now plenty of delicious options available, whatever your dietary requirements.

Takeaways and Eating Out

Pizza nights no longer have to be missed.

Many takeaway restaurants now cater for gluten free diets. Domino’s offers a gluten free pizza base with a variety of toppings, including plant-based options, although you have to request when ordering as they currently do not do a gluten free and dairy free pizza on their standard menu. PizzaExpress restaurants serve gluten free pizzas with a choice of toppings, including plant-based mozzarella.

Whether you’re ordering a takeaway or eating out with friends, finding a gluten free pizza with dairy free toppings has become far easier than it once was.

Making Your Own Pizza

Two images one of the ingredients to make a home made pizza plus some pizza dough and a part baked base with tomato sauce. The other of a homemade pizza cooking away in a wood fired pizza oven.

After buying a pizza oven, I was excited to discover that Ooni sold gluten free flour together with ready-made gluten free sourdough dough balls. Individually wrapped and delivered chilled, they’re ideal for freezing and simply need defrosting before use.

I really wanted to love them, but I found the dough quite difficult to handle. It required a generous dusting of gluten free flour and behaved more like pastry than traditional pizza dough. Although the finished pizzas were enjoyable, they took longer to cook than standard pizzas and personally the process wasn’t as straightforward as I’d hoped.

Everything changed when I discovered Dave’s Pizza Oven gluten free pizza dough through Kat Farmer on Instagram.

The dough is incredibly forgiving, easy to shape and produces fantastic pizzas every time. Better still, one batch makes four pizzas, so you can freeze the dough balls or part bake the bases ready for another day. It gives you all the convenience of a shop-bought pizza with the satisfaction of making your own.

I’ve since adapted the recipe to create my own Truly Yummy Pizza recipe, complete with my favourite homemade tomato sauce and plenty of dairy free topping suggestions. For me, it’s the best of both worlds – fresh, healthier, made with ingredients you know and trust and flexible enough to create exactly the pizza you enjoy most.

A Quick Pizza Wrap Alternative

Another quick way for making your own pizza which I often do for lunch, is to use a gluten free wrap as the base. It works equally well in a conventional oven or in an outdoor pizza oven and is ready in just a few minutes. Simply top the wrap with tomato sauce or even a thin layer of tomato purée and your favourite dairy free toppings before baking until crisp. Using a wrap guarantees a perfectly round shaped pizza with an incredibly thin, crispy base. They’re perfect for a quick lunch with a fresh salad, an after-school snack or whenever you’re craving pizza but don’t have time to make dough from scratch.

The wraps I’d recommend and have used many times are Bfree Gluten Free Multigrain wraps which are widely available in UK supermarkets.

It’s a great way to satisfy a pizza craving when you don’t have time to make dough from scratch or the budget for a takeaway.
