Truly Yummy Sweet Potato Fries

Truly Yummy Sweet Potato Fries

Easy homemade gluten free and dairy free sweet potato fries, seasoned with a simple spice mix and baked until deliciously tasty.

A cost-effective homemade alternative

Sweet potato fries have become a popular alternative to traditional chips and in recent years they’ve become one of my favourite sides. I used to buy frozen Strong Roots Sweet Potato Fries and their Garlic Roasted Sweet Potato Cubes. Both are great products and I highly recommend them. They are also gluten free and dairy free which makes them a convenient option when you’re looking for an easy side dish.

However, when you’re feeding two adults and a growing family, one bag simply wasn’t enough. I found myself needing to buy two bags at a time. Soon this became quite an expensive side for our family meal. Rather than continuing to buy them, I decided to experiment and see if I could make my own sweet potato fries and garlic cubes at home.

Simple ingredients, great flavour

I wanted to create something that was cost effective but still easy to make and full of flavour. I’ve tried making them with cornflour to help crisp them up but to be perfectly honest it didn’t work particularly well for me. I prefer the simplicity of using fresh sweet potatoes, coating them in a little olive oil and adding my own spice mix before cooking.

The result is a tasty sweet potato fry or cube. They have plenty of flavour and crisp up equally well without the cornflour. You can choose to cut the sweet potato into fries or cubes depending on what you’re serving them with.

Perfect with Cajun Chicken

My favourite way to serve these is alongside butterflied Cajun chicken and my Truly Yummy Mexican Salad. The combination of the spicy chicken, fresh and colourful salad and seasoned sweet potato fries makes a delicious and satisfying meal.

In the recipe below, I’ve left the quantity of cornflour so you can try making them either way and decide which method works best for you. I prefer to cook mine in the oven but they can equally be cooked in an air fryer if you prefer.
