Honest Review & What’s Actually Worth Buying

This is a personal post based on my own experience. I’m not being paid to promote any brands and everything here reflects my honest findings. I hope it helps anyone navigating gluten free bread.

My Early Gluten Free Bread Experience

Gluten free bread has come a long way over the years. I’ve been gluten intolerant for over thirty years now and I remember when my bread, along with other gluten free essentials, used to come from my local pharmacy on prescription. Back then, Schär white sliced bread was the only option available. You had to heat it in the oven, toaster or microwave just to freshen it up and to be honest it wasn’t great for sandwiches. I mostly used it for toast and lived on gluten free crispbreads and rice crackers for my lunches and snacks.

The Variety of Gluten Free Bread Today

Truly Yummy Substitute Gluten Free Bread

Since then, the choice has exploded: white, brown, seeded loaves, bread rolls, baguettes, wraps, pittas and crumpets are all widely available in your local supermarket. However, not every product lives up to the taste and texture of “real” bread and some struggle with freezing and reheating.

How I Use Gluten Free Bread at Home

I don’t eat gluten free bread daily, so to avoid waste, especially as I’m the only one in the family eating it, I freeze loaves and defrost a couple of slices at a time. Not all brands cope well with this. The lack of gluten in the bread can make it crumble or dry out.

My Recommended Gluten Free Bread Brand

After trying many brands, especially wholemeal and multigrain loaves, there’s one I can wholeheartedly recommend. The brand Promise in particular their multigrain loaf tastes fantastic and handles freezing, reheating and general manipulation well. I’ve also tried their bread rolls for burgers, lightly toasted, they’re perfect with my Truly Yummy Burgers.

If you’re browsing the Free From aisle for yourself, a friend or family, a Promise loaf is a safe bet, you won’t be disappointed. Another quick lunchtime treat I love is the Free From Chicken & Bacon Sandwich from Marks & Spencer. The bread is amazing and the filling to bread ratio is just right.

Shop Bought vs Homemade Gluten Free Bread

Of course, there are plenty of recipes for homemade gluten free bread but unless you eat it daily and enjoy baking, I’d recommend sticking with shop bought options for convenience. I am working on my own recipe and I’ll be sharing it here very soon!

Using Gluten Free Bread For Breadcrumbs

Don’t forget you can create your own breadcrumbs for recipes using gluten free bread. Simply toast a few slices and pop them in a food processor to crumb up. They’re great for creating my Truly Yummy Stuffing recipe. But if you’re looking to create crispy chicken, turkey or pork schnitzel, I’d recommend using either gluten free cornflakes or Mrs Crimbles Ready to Use Breadcrumbs.
